The UN Human Rights Council announced on Thursday „no military intervention” against Saddam Hussein’s people in the Middle East at the end of the year, as UN human rights spokesman Todd Stern urged the international community to step in.

Stern’s call comes three days after a spokesman for the Iraqi government, Ibrahim al-Mahmoud, told the UN Security Council that „weapons of mass destruction” were used by President Saddam Hussein in attacks launched in 2003. The UN believes the attack on Iraq in February 2003 may have been the beginning of the end of the war there.

„There were no military intervention attempts on Saddam Hussein’s property against civilians. Even the very first attempt at attacking the school of al-Fatiyeh went wrong.” al-Mahmoud said that the situation was already deteriorating and it was necessary for an international and regional response.

The council will meet on Friday to assess whether any action can be taken to prevent the „unprecedented mass destruction of homes and buildings” caused by Iraq’s invasion, the council said in a statement.

Stern said that Iraqi civilians were killed while military forces destroyed an „unprecedented” number of buildings, including „a school of schools, a school of schools, a school of schools.”
